I have come to have an appreciation for naval/maritime tales. :) Whether it was growing up reading about Horatio Hornblower, or coming to appreciate the Capt. Aubrey stories of O'Brian as an adult, there's just something very cool about stories set upon the sea. :ged:

Yet, it seems to me that is an underused setting for high fantasy in contrast to all of the earthbound quests on foot or horseback... :?

the ones which immediately come to mind:
LeGuin's Earthsea (series)
Hobb's Liveship Traders (trilogy)
Lynch's Red Seas under Red Skies (sequel to Lies of Locke Lamora)
Naomi Novik's Termeraire (part of the series is set on British naval ships)
Donaldson's The One Tree
some of Anne McCaffrey's Pern books have a sea or seaside setting...

Which ones am I missing?

The Scar (China Mieville) is a good one. You pretty much listed everything else I can think of.

He realized that on some deep level, the grains and pulses and other vegetable foods that he had eaten for so many years had never truly satisfied him. Always, buried in the tissues of his heart and belly, there had burned a deep desire to consume the meat of another animal and to taste the marvelous tang of blood once more. War in Heaven, p. 387.

This almost looks like the thread I started on KW-I'll add Lewis' The Voyage of the Dawn Treader which, I hear, is the next Narnia movie to come out...

The only Lewis film I liked was Shadowlandswith a great performance by Anthony Hopkins. I didn't like the actual Narnia film at all - although Ray Winstone was quite funny as the voice of the beaver.
