And they have set a release date for the last WOT book! If all goes well, you should see it in your local bookstore in October, 2009! :) 8)

I've never read any of those books; I guess if the last one is really, really good, I might give it a go. But that's a whole lot of books to commit yourself to read.

They are huge and very varying quality. :?

The last WOT book and last ASOIAF book came out at roughly the same time. Now I am wondering if that will happen again.

And given that Jordan had a fatal illness, with much traveling back and forth between the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and his home in South Carolina, and that Jordan passed away and the new author had to be chosen by his widow, and that the new author had to read the entire series closely, and has had to try to weave together the pieces of the story Jordan had frantically completed with his own work on the story following Jordan's outlines...it is really frustrating for at least some Martin fans. :?

I want to see the end. I expect to be disappointed. *shrug* I'm a fan of the books...but they are of very varying quality. book 1 - 6 great. 7-9mediocre with bright spots. 10 - godawful. 11, excellent recovery, just too fast paced.

I expected to be disappointed no matter what...there are too many plot points for everything to be resolved...and 10 was really bad...

Yes, ten really was terrible - but I, too, shall read the last book.

Sanderson also finished up his own Mistborn fantasy trilogy recently. I have not read it, but those who have say that each book was stronger than the one before it, and Sanderson is really coming into his own as a good writer. 8) That gives me some hope that the last WOT book will not be total crap.

And let's face it, on a bad day, Jordan's writing wasn't exactly great. But he said before he died that some points definitely wouldn't be resolved. And now there's no chance of them ever being again.

From the sound of it, Jordan had written key parts of the book (such as the ending) and left outlines for most of the rest, and well as a lot of tape recordings from his literal death bed about what he had wanted to do in the book. And from reading his blog, Sanderson is a huge fan, and is very respectful towards Jordan's legacy. I think there is at least a chance of it turning out to be all right. :)

Here is Sanderson's blog, by the way.

Right now he is talking about the third book of his own trilogy being released, as it just came out. But he does often talk about the last WOT book and his progress with it.

In a recent blog entry, Sanderson says that he is moving right along and that he is on schedule to possibly finish next summer. However, he also said what a lot of us have suspected all along, and that this is turning into a monstrously long book, and that the publisher might have to split it into two volumes. :?
