In the last few months, I have stared reading some historical fantasy by Judith Tarr, and am finding it to be an enoyable experience.
I first read
The Hound and the Falcon Trilogy which consisted of:
The Isle of Glass
The Golden Horn
The Hounds of God
They were about an immortal elf who was found by the good brothers in a monastery in England who is named Bother Alfred. Over the decades he does not physically age past his teen age years - he is beautiful and can do healing magic. Yet - though he does nothing but good with his life - he has profound doubts as to his worth, as the Church teaches his kind are without soul, the work of the Devil.
The stories follow Alf from his peaceful monastery to the service of Richard the Lion Heart, to Constantinople and the horrors of the Fourth Crusade, and on to Rome, where he must fight for the lives of his people.
The books were nice, character driven stories (even though you want to spank Alf from time to time over his stubborness
).
I then read
The Epona Trilogy which consists of:
White Mare's Daughter
Daughter of Lir
Lady of Horses.
These are set in prehistory, and feature the culture clash and shock when the patriarchal sky god worshippers, fierce horse warriors from the Asian steppes meet the peaceful farmers - matriarchal earth goddess worshippers of eastern Europe.
Again, these were nice and well written character driven historical fantasy.
I do not know if anyone else here has given Judith Tarr a try, or has enjoyed her work?
