Looking for something simple and easy after a couple of longer books, I'm reading The Wizard of Oz. Have about 10-12 Oz books on my Kindle that I grabbed for free. So far enjoying the first one.

I tried to read those at my Grandfathers when I was 12 or so, the Tick-Tock Man and Jack O'Lantern freaked me out too much, that series gets weird...

I'm very deep in Brust's Vlad Taltos series, just finished book 7 and ordered 8-10. I bought Jhegaala (#11) but you have to read the books in order so it's killing me to take a break. #12 is on the shelves, but doesn't come out mass market until November and he's almost finished writing #13. Aside from Taltos they're all named after the 16 ruling houses in the empire-so there will be 17 books all together. I bought 500 Years After which is part of 3 books on Dragerean history, but it's kind of hard to get into because it has an almost Guy Gavriel Kay floweriness to it, a little formal...and or course it doesn't have Vlad. I wish someone would make a map of these lands and a miniseries of the series.

Not bad having a series like this going since 1983...

I want a Kindle! I've been walking the treadmill at the gym a lot lately and Kindle is THE best way to read while you're doing that.

I grabbed about 10 of them for free off of Gutenburg's free ebook site, but am just on the first one currently. I will read the others from time to time when I need a break between more emotionally involving books. I used the Series of Unfortunate Events and other juvey books for the same purpose before.

Juvey books are highly under-rated. Some of my favourites, which I still reread, are technically juvenile fiction.

The thing I found very appealing about juvey books, is they seem to stick to the sf/fantasy storyline and leave out a lot of politics, sexual escapades, etc. Not that I don't enjoy those things in their place, but when I read scifi, I want a good scifi story and don't want to have to fight thru the clutter to get it.

Never thought of that. Although I can think of juve books that include both is moderate amounts, most don't I agree.

Anyway, Im just starting to re-read Midnight Tides.

Have started reading Guy Gavriel Kay's Under Heaven - set in an analogue of Tang China. I have been hearing endless squee over it over on the Martin board, about how it is a masterpiece destined to be considered a classic of the genre.

If the rest of the book lives up to he first couple of chapters, that squee might be right. :heaven:

Reading Gene Wolfe's "The Sorcerer's House". About 40% through. Excellent so far. Written in the style of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Story told thru letters.
