I'm two-thirds of the way through the Scavenger Trilogy ('Shadow', 'Pattern', 'Memory'), by KJ Parker. An interesting read, about a man who wakes up with no memory of who he is or where he is....

I'm still plodding through a stack of books I received as gifts around Christmas--R A Salvatore's Lone Drow series, and the Harry Potter series. Both are light reads, but of the two I'd definitely reccomend Harry Potter. I put the series off because I assumed it was too silly or predictable. I guess it is, but the stories move quickly, and are, for the most part, fun to read. Now I know what my nieces and nephews have been raving about the past couple of years!

Salvatore's books are too goofy. There's nothing like reading a bad D&D adventure!

I just got done reading a little two book series called Wizard's Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. She is an author my 11 year old son enjoys. These two books were good natured fluff, and I have to say I enjoyed them as a change of pace. The first of the two stories involved a pretty teen aged girl who makes hats and who is cursed by a witch...the second involved a princess kidnapped by a djinn, a flying carpet, and a genie in a bottle...and they both involve a flying castle... ******************************************************

I just finished a beautifully written book by Patricia McKillip called In the Forests of Serre. It was very heavily flavored with Russian mythology and legend, and was quite a good read... ******************************************************

I'm three books into Erikson's Tales of the Malazan Book of the Fallen. I'm starting to think perhaps this will be the series that finally makes me decided that I hate reading unfinished series, heh.

Actually... I can't remember the last series I read that was 'finished', unless TCTC counts....

I had just started to read Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay when The Lightstone by David Zindell arrived early from the UK--I'm over 100 pages in and I'm totally blown away-see the Falling 2 Neverness forum for more info...

I enjoyed In the Forests of Serre so much, Iam now reading McKillip's latest book, Alphabet of Thorn. Incidentally, Murrin. most of her books are stand alones. The one exception that I am aware of is a trilogy that you can get in an all-in-one trade paperback.

Later this week I will be reading some Gene Wolfe, in hopes that I can make some contributions to Syl's Matachin Tower. ******************************************************

Same here, Duchess, though I just finished The Book of Atrix Wolfe instead (actually picked it up the day before Donaldson listed it as one of his favorites). Oh, man, what a great book. Reminded me a *lot* of Donaldson, especially the Forestals. ________________

Just want to say that if anyone here *doesn't* at some point read Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series, they have missed out on something great. Finished Midnight Tides yesterday - brilliant.

Just finished the Circle of Magic quartet (4 book series, but the books are small ) by Tamora Pierce. It's about four children from very different backgrounds (young high born & orphaned white noble, orphaned & outcast black trader, young daughter of merchants thrown out & unwanted by her parents, and a young orphaned street rat/thief) who end up living in a small cottage at a mage temple & school together. They and their teacher/mentors become each other's family, as they learn to use the unusual magics they were born with. Intended for Young Adults, but still quite good, even for grown ups.

As someone who works in hospitals, the last of the four books, dealing with a plague, was particularly interesting. Some of the other problems the children and their teachers face are earthquakes, pirate raids, and huge forest fires.

I got the books at Barnes & Noble in the form of two hardcovers, with the first two books in one, and books three and four together in the other. The first one is called Books One and Two: Water and Fire and the second is called Books Three and Four: Air and Earth. I think you can also find them as four paperbacks. ******************************************************

(If all these posts get restored, how'll it affect topics we've replied to since they were lost?)

I've recently read King Rat by Miéville, and Fevre Dream by Martin. Currently reading The Once and Future King by TH White - 7 chapters into The Sword in the Stone.

Murrin, supposedly it will not affect them. ezboard said it would be OK to go ahead and post. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I am reading an interesting general novel right now called The Forest Lover by Susan Vreeland. I have also been reading some Navajo mythology.

The long awaited Black Jade by David Zindell, third book of his epic fantasy series.

I am loving it, and can't wait for danlo to get it so we can talk about it!!! ******************************************************

I finished up Zindell's Black Jade a couple of days ago. I hope danlo gets it soon, as I am dying to talk about it with him.

I started a children's series tonight, known as The Dark is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper. The individual books are called
Over Sea, Under Stone
The Dark is Rising
Greenwitch
The Grey King
Silver on the Tree

Right now I am on Over Sea, Under Stone. I have only read a couple of chapters, but it seems promising. A family with three children have gone to stay with an old family friend (a famous and adventurous professor) at a mysterious old house near the ocean in a little village in Cornwall. Right now the kids are having a lot of fun exploring the house on a rainy day. ******************************************************

I've moved on to the second book in the series, The Dark is Rising. This series seems to be about an epic and ages-old struggle of good and evil, all mixed up with Arthurian legends and the current day. ******************************************************
