It is quite easy to see how out of the mainstream I am to sci-fi. I recognized 3 of your favorite authors, and I am sure the rest are just as talented. I tend to keep visiting my favorites; although I do read new Dune prequels and every dragonrider book to come out because I know the people. I need to branch out apparently.

I definately have 2 agree w/u about Jack Vance (who lives in NM, btw) and James Blish (Blishes work may have been a major inspriration 4 Neverness, btw). King u seem 2 know more about Anne McCaffery than I--she seems 2 b more Fantasy than Sci-Fi--could I implore u 2 start the McCaffery topic in Gen. Fantasy, please? In my web explorations and from what members tell me there is a def, need 4 that topic, thanks! Fall Far and Well Pilots!

"Some of the Scottish troops ran for five miles before they were killed. Others threw themselves into the sea. The number of dead is impossible to calculate, but there must have been several thousand. They included 5 Scottish Earls. The few prisoners who had been taken were put to death on Edward III's order, a final act of savagery for which there is no rational explanation. English casualties were light. cool I love Jack Williamson! In the Ellison thread Ellison himself says Bester and Bradbury were his mentors. I do like Stapledon alot--I wonder if any1 can answer this question: why is it that Russian Sci-Fi authors, they'r r'nt that many and their writng is very beautiful, have this fascination w/water as a means of escape 2 freedom? Is it due 2 their land-locked, repressed society, or is it something else? Fall Far and Well Pilots!Edited by: danlo60 at: 12/29/02 11:21:45 am

Dunno. Russians do like Waterways Songs. Volga Boatman and all that. Perhaps its a cultural thing. "Some of the Scottish troops ran for five miles before they were killed.
