I didn't like The White Plague either, but it's a whole different slant. In Frank Herbert's book an American scientist who was visiting Dublin with his family gets caught up in an IRA bomb. So he (naturally) decides to release a virus to wipe out all women in Ireland, which then spreads out across the world.
He seemed to think that having less women in the world (as some were immune) would empower them over men, but if you look in China for example, the opposite seems to be the case. In China there are proportionally fewer females to males, what is actually happening is that women from the country are being lured into the cities by snakeheads with promises of employment, and then basically being sold off in marriage. <i></i>
