On August 1, 2005 a story collection by Gene Wolfe called Starwater Strains is due to be released.

Quote:
Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Unlike his previous all-fantasy short fiction collection InnocentsAboard (2004),Wolfe's seventh volume of stellar short stories, written mostly between 2000 and 2005, ranges from haunting horror and biting near-contemporary social commentary to high fantasy and far-future SF, all amply demonstrating his mastery of trademark ironic twists of plot and characterization. Two longer pieces frame the collection. In "Viewpoint," Wolfe postulates a "reality show for real," with "a real government clawing for the money," while "Golden City Far" blends adolescent dreams of love and magic with a talking dog and deeds perilous and poignant. Between them Wolfe includes such minor masterpieces as "Petting Zoo," recounting the memories of better days lived by a man and an aged tofu-eating dinosaur, one of Wolfe's favorite beasts. Wolfe's dead-on ear for dialect shines in little morsels of horror like "The Fat Magician" and the apocalyptic "Mute," both treating humanity's capacity for self-destruction. The wonderful shocker "Pulp Cover" provides an invaluable clue to both this outstanding collection and Wolfe's creativity, that tiny, inevitable wrench when dream gives way to reality, reality to nightmare, and we understand, "It isn't really like that at all."

Transcendent by Stephen Baxter, the concluding volume of his Destiny's Children Trilogy was recently released. This interweaves action on Earth in the near future with genetic engineering and outer space in the far future...

Iain Bank's latest book, The Algebraist, is not easy at all to find in America, but it has rececently become available through the Science Fiction book Club. This is science fiction, but is not part of his Culture series.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Banks (Look to Windward) pulls out all the stops in this gloriously over-the-top, state-of-the-art space opera, a Hugo nominee in its British edition. In a galaxy teeming with intelligent life-forms and dominated by the intensely hierarchical society known as the Mercatoria, the Ulubis system has been cut off from the rest of civilization for over a century as its citizens impatiently await the arrival of a starship carrying an artificial wormhole to replace one destroyed in a previous war. Fassin Taak is a Slow Seer, an anthropologist who studies the Dwellers, the ancient, enigmatic species that inhabits gas giants throughout the galaxy, including Nasqueron in the Ulubis system. Fassin's research contains clues to the existence of a secret wormhole network, one operated by the Dwellers and free from the repressive control of the Mercatoria. Unfortunately, the monstrous ruler of a nearby star system has also learned of this discovery, as has the Mercatoria itself. Now two enormous battle fleets converge on Ulubis, and Fassin must undertake a quest deep into Nasqueron to uncover the Dwellers' secret. This is an enormously enjoyable book, full of wonderful aliens, a sense of wonder and subtle political commentary on current events.

Book Description
It is 4034 AD. Humanity has made it to the stars. Fassin Taak, a Slow Seer at the Court of the Nasqueron Dwellers, will be fortunate if he makes it to the end of the year. The Nasqueron Dwellers inhabit a gas giant on the outskirts of the galaxy, in a system awaiting its wormhole connection to the rest of civilisation. In the meantime, they are dismissed as decadents living in a state of highly developed barbarism, hoarding data without order, hunting their own young and fighting pointless formal wars. Seconded to a military-religious order he's barely heard of - part of the baroque hierarchy of the Mercatoria, the latest galactic hegemony - Fassin Taak has to travel again amongst the Dwellers. He is in search of a secret hidden for half a billion years. But with each day that passes a war draws closer - a war that threatens to overwhelm everything and everyone he's ever known.

This has been avialable via Nigtshade books, and I'd guess with a better product ell, as Nightsahde is top notch in that department. The Bodhisattva

Judas Unchained, second half of a duology that began with Pandora's Star, and written by peter F. Hamilton, is now out. I am hoping to read these sometime soon. They are said to be space opera and intrigue at a very high level, and very well written. ******************************************************

There is a new release from Canadian science fiction writer (and Hugo and Nebula award winner) Robert Sawyer that sounds like it might be an interesting first contact sort of story called Rollback.

Another fairly recent release that keeps catching my eye is called The Silver Ship and the Sea by a writer named Brenda Cooper. I am not familiar with her, but I love the title, and the story - a tiny human colony stuck on a very dangerous world - has possibilities.

And, of course, John Scalzi's The Last Colony - sequel to Old Man's War and The Ghost Brigades is out this month. (insert happy dance emoticon here)

In March , 2008, Iain Banks' new Culture novel, Matter is due to be released:

Quote:
On an artificial world built by a vanished civilization—a world of many levels, colonizing species and deadly surprises—a king is murdered in the midst of war. For one of his sons, this treachery means a desperate flight in an attempt to clear his name. For another, a life lived under constant threat of assassination. And for their sister Djan, a mission back to a place she thought she'd left forever.

Changed almost beyond recognition to become an agent of the Culture's Special Circumstances division, Djan Seriy Anaplian interferes in the affairs of civilizations throughout the galaxy. Meddling in someone else's war is never simple, but Anaplian will find that intervening in her homeworld's crisis is a far more difficult matter....

An extremely fun new release (it is a stand alone mass market paperback) is entitled Norse Code, written by Greg van Eekhout. It combines science fiction, fantasy, and Norse mythology as Ragnarok comes to Los Angeles. The main two characters are a Mexican-American valkyrie and the Norse god Hermod, who are trying to find a way to save Midgard from certain and total destruction. 8)

Kim Stanley Robinson has a new novel just released about a time traveling Galileo. Looks like it might be a lot of fun. :D 8)

I've never read anything of his except the "Mars" books, and I really got bogged down in those.

You know, if that were to happen, I hope that they would bring in one of her other collaborators, such as Scarborough, rather than Todd, who simply shows no writing talent at all. :td:

New novel from Joe Haldeman called Starbound. I think it might be related to his last book, Marsbound. (I have not read either one, so cannot be 100% sure on that one way or the other).

I've read Tool of the Trade and Man in the Maze by him, and enjoyed them both, different as they were from each other. Never anything else though.

New novel from Colorado writer Connie Willis set in the same future Earth as her classic Doomsday Book ~ this one is called Blackout and features her time traveling Oxford University history students. This time around they are going back to World War II. I am hoping this will be a good one, given the high quality of Doomsday Book. 8)

A novel from another Colorado writer named Paolo Bacigalupi, who has won important awards for his short stories, is set in near future Thailand and is being praised to the skies by critics and is supposedly the early favorite for this year's Hugo. The Windup Girl deals with genetic engineering and food as international currency. It is supposed to be very good.

Good news about Connie Willis! I very much liked Doomsday Book. (Hmm, I wonder where in Colorado she lives...?)

No worries, it was just sort of idle speculation. Wondering about, y'know, networking opportunities, if I do end up moving there this year. ;)

AHEM the guy this board is dedicated to, David Zindell, lives in Boulder too!!!

Willis is from Greenly CO. I've yet to read her stuff, but she comes to Bubonicon almost every year-great friends with Bob Vardeman and George Martin and his Wild Card bunch. Saw her on a panel once, very sharp.
