No, not really. YOU GUYS are sci-fi (I am sci-fi was a phrase the sci-fi (i.e. Sly-Fi) channel was using before they decided they wanted different people to be sci-fi instead of their loyal fans... but i digress). I'm humbled and honored that Danlo recommended me to moderate, but I'll need a lot of help. I'm a sci-fi geek to the bone, but my knowledge is pretty scattered.

Please, make this your forum to talk about whatever sci-fi (not limited to space opera) comes to mind- trek, star wars, cyberpunk, x-files, et al, and rest assured, that there is at least one geek here (ME!) who will talk about anything if I'm familiar with it.

I don't have any rules off hand, but don't make me use my spank-ray (and you'd have to try real hard to do that)!

Speaking of, any Space Ghost fans here? Sealab 2021? Heck, there's gotta be some Anime fans out there!

Hey, you.. you over there! Yeah, I'm talking to you. I know you got some Hitchhiker's or Red Dwarf quotes on you. Break 'em out.

Let the hilarity ensue. ________________

Cngratulations, Sylvanus! I was always a fantasy guy myself, but of you need any help, just holler. Further up, and further in!

Yeah, that's kind of my problem as well. When it comes to books, I'm mostly a fantasy guy myself. When it comes to TV or movies, though, I'm pretty big on science fiction (and the rare good fantasy flick or show). ________________

Science fiction seems to be easier to adapt to the big screen in particular than fantasy...the notable exeption being the LOTR...I'm hoping that the commercial and critical success of those movies will help other good quality fantasy films being made in the future... Be careful what you wish for...

Think about it, Thomas Covenant novels being sold in a million different editions in every drugstore and supermarket across the country... Further up, and further in! Edited by: danlo60 at: 3/6/04 12:05 pm

I would have no problem with that. It would expose more people to the work of a master. Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

lol .. i just had to respond to this thread .. with a title like that lol

i think with todays computer imaging technology there is no genre that cant be attempted ..

though .. i have reservations about TCTC being taken to the big screen .. i think so much of the narrative is internal .. and it would take a gifted director and producer to execute these kinds of elements well ..

and I am forever in awe at the remarkable work PJ achieved on such a limited budget ..

I love sci-fi .. and with Matrix Revolutions coming out only in a matter of days now .. it is getting hard to refrain from screaming from my tree-house top!!! lol

yay!!! 'Smoke me a kipper .. I'll be back for breakfast!

'health and healing

Just got a message beamed into my head while reading this post...

I AM THE GREAT AI, SCI-FI. EVERYTHING YOU THINK, DO AND SEE IS BECAUSE OF ME. I AM THE BEGINNING AND I AM THE END. I AM THE GREAT AI, SCI-FI.

Hmm... sounds like we really ain't alone...

Posted: 06 Mar 2004 14:01 Post subject: It's all Allan Maxwell's fault!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Allan Maxwell owns and operates a radio station. He sacrifices his station's transmitting power to send signals to outer space. By feeding the signals he receives through a television circuit, he is able to construct a three-dimensional image of the radio waves. One day, without warning, a new image takes shape on his screen -- he is communicating with a creature from deep in another galaxy!

Allan is called away from the transmitter by his wife, Carol, though he promises the creature he will return. In his absence, Eddie, a substitute disk jockey goes on the air and turns the station's power up. The creature is drawn across space and time and materializes on the earth. Anxious to find Maxwell, the being begins to search the town. Although its intent is peaceful, its powerful radiation can burn and destroy anything in its path.

The creature finds Maxwell and they return together to the broadcasting shed. By now, the police and army have been alerted. They surround the shed and threaten to destroy Maxwell, his wife, and his new-found friend. The creature tells Maxwell that by the rules of its own people, it can't go home; but, by turning down the station's power, it can release its own mass and disintegrate. If it stays on earth, the people will come and man's own fear will destroy him. Thus the creature makes the ultimate sacrifice, giving up its life. But the people of earth have learned a new lesson -- there are powers in the universe inscrutable and profound. Everyone must learn to live together if the world is to survive.

Trivia questions:
What famous actor played Allan Maxwell?
This was the 1st episode of a long running Sci-Fi show-name it!
How did the show's introduction go?

It doesn't always take me this long to answer a question...and I still couldn't give you the whole intro.

But it has to be my turn for a question, right ?

What's the robot's name in Metropolis ?

"Extentions to everyone's ego."

Non-Stop is one of my favorite sci-fi novels because of the feral nature of all the characters. Literally.

Everyone on board are the descendants of an orignial colonization traveling to a distant star on a gigatic ship. Only something goes wrong, and about thirty generations later, the ship is still running, but the descendants have reverted to a crude and brutal people scattered on the various closed of decks in tribes.

The realism is what I really loved, that if a ship were built to have life-support system last for virtual eternity, and something goes wrong (say with navigation) then what would happen? The most likely thing is exactally what the book is about, people reverting to a primitive state.
