House Corrino is making a bid for absolute power. Thousands of innocent people die as Shaddam tries to destroy all known stockpiles of melange, and as he supports the take-over of the high tech world of Ix by the Tleilaxu, who are very close to making synthetic spice.

Opposing him is his cousin, Leto Atriedes, who is supporting the rebels on Ix, and trying to put his friend, Prince Rhombur, back into power on that planet. As Shaddam's atrocities multiply, Leto's voice becomes more and more important in the opposition.

To complicate things even more, Jessica is finally with child. The Empress, a highly ranked Bene Gesserit, knows the importance of the child to the breeding program, and knows of the threat to the Atreides from the Harkonnen. She orders Jessica to the capital in an attempt to keep her and the unborn child safe.
