Dune: House Atreides is the first novel in a trilogy by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. This trilogy sets the stage for Dune, telling the backstory of many of the major characters.

In House Atreides we meet a young Leto, along with his battling parents, Duke Paulus and the Duchess Helena, who had a political marriage. She came from House Richese, allied with the Harkonnen. Leto goes to the high tech world of Ix for a year to be fostered by House Vernius. The son of that house, Prince Rhombur becomes Leto's closest friend, and the beautiful daughter of the House, Kailea will become his first great love and concubine.

Ix is taken over by the Bene Tleilaxu. They wish the riches of the planet which builds Highliners -- and they have a secret plot with Prince Shaddam of House Corrino to discover a way to make artificial spice.

We also meet Shaddam, Prince of the royal House of Corrino. He, along with his best friend, Fenring, have murdered Shaddam's way to his top spot as heir to the throne. now they are trying to figure out how to murder him onto the throne...

And we also meet the terrible Harkonnen... ******************************************************
