Sometimes someone is just born old. My older son was born a middle aged professor in demeanor and personality, as an example. So it might be that Paul just had such a personality to begin with, and all of the training just reinforced that.

Moonwatcher, you did a great job with this very important chapter, and I will be back in a couple of days (once the holiday is over) to comment more fully (I want to reread the chapter again).

Ah well, for me, the most interesting part has always been his life with the Fremen, and how he rose among them.

Sorry it has taken so long, but I have finally read the chapter this morning.

The thing that moved me the most was Jessica's dream of Leto's name being erased. The woman defied everything and everyone most important in her previous life for Leto, and in this moment he is gone, and in her dream she sees him being erased from history.

Yes, the tech is awesome here. The still suits. The specialized sand tools. Even the tent with its "sphincter". Brings home again how dangerous and demanding the environment on Arrakis really is.

The tech is indeed awesome. Herbert, like Heinlein, knew the secret to good Sci-Fi. Don't ever explain it. Just drop it in. "The door dilated." Innocuous everyday things that exemplify the degree of difference between our world and theirs, yet without requiring a great deal of thought or rationalising.

Meaning less work for him.

I love his tech. The ornithopters have always killed me. Never seen a representation I really like. Sneaky bastard.

Heinlein too...damn...I'm not sure I've ever noticed the paucity of explanation in Heinleins work...At least, never in terms of something lacking.

I've always imagined the ornithopters as kind of "insectiod"; spidery, dragonfly type things...not the flying boxcars in the film.

Yeah...well, my opinions of the film are well known I think. But I agree with Danlo...much sleeker etc.
