Yeah, great post. I think it was in the intro to God Emperor that they talk about his records being discovered 10,000 years later.

But I'm still not seeing evidence that the act of seeing the future creates that future...hmmm...except in the sense that if you are accurately prescient your seeing it means it is going to happen.

But creating it? Plenty of things happened that weren't foreseen as it were...the future happens whether you see it or not. Your suggestion seems to suggest that if Leto hadn't looked forward and seen the machines destroying humans, it wouldn't happen...

I just finished God Emperor and found it fairly weird and hard to get into. Still thinking about it, though. The musings about it in this thread are interesting.

Debating whether to go on to the next book or not...

Things really start getting weird in the next two books. You skip thousands of years into the future again, and Herbert passed away before he could write the concluding book. So you read these two really strange books, and then do not get a conclusion.

Congrats to MsMary for making it this far into the Dune series! I'm embarrassed to say I still haven't read Chapterhouse. So there's no real conclusion, huh? What a shame for such a remarkable saga to have no closure.

Anyway, I really miss EL, especially after reading his posts here.

Well, I ordered Heretics and Chapterhouse from the library, so I guess I'm committed.

When I read this I thought Leto's plan was to give humanity such firm control, for so long, that they would burst into new creativity (chaos) in reaction to it. I also thought Leto was breeding Siona's line until he achieved an Atreides who would have the strength and rebellion to kill him. Also, I thought he kept himself supplied with a Duncan until the right Atreides matured, and then he would be that one's catalyst and partner to precipitate new freedom for humanity.

I don't remember reading a prediction from Leto of machines killing humans. When you find it in GOD EMPEROR, could you direct me to it?

I felt the same way...didn't feel that it had to end any other way. Hell, when I first read them, I didn't know there could be any other way. I thought that was the end.

That's what I would have thought, too, if I hadn't read here that there was supposed to be more to the story.

I've heard enough about the son's writing that I am not particularly tempted to read any further Dune stories.

Yeah, I haven't bothered seeking them out. And if I do, it'll probably only be for the prequels. As far as I'm concerned, Dune ended at Chapter House.
