I'm 29 pages into Endymion and I'm wondering if anyone else had a hard start to this book. Raul is engaging and it's great to be back on Hyperion again, but my old paperback version seems to switch his age back and forth: first he's 27 then he's 28 then he's 27 again. Is this an editing boo-boo? And, also, does anyone have the feeling that the book starts out a bit rough? The writting just feels a bit odd, as if Simmons, once the Hegemony is wiped out, knows he has a great new story to tell, but he's just a little bit unsure how to get it going. *****

Hang with it. It all starts to make sense once an important second character makes her entrance.

Endymion is an important man - but not because of being brighter or stronger or braver or more educated than anyone else. His voice reflects that lack of higher education. In many ways he is an average Joe from the Outback, and a lot of the time he doesn't quite "get" what is going on around him until he has time to reflect on things.

I came to adore him by the end of the story.

Holy crap! I don't like the ideal of having my molecules flattened in an archangel courier only to be ressurrected on two planets within a week! Eeek! , I don't know maybe that's just me... *****

Well it's not like the curciforms, the Shrike or the blood-gutted labyrinths don't I was right up to the rescue attempt when I left my book out in a thunderstorm! *****

Are you talking about the rescue at the Time Tombs?

To me, that is one of the greatest scenes in all of science fiction!!! ******************************************************

Holy crap the story really grabbed me by the cojones after page 400! Nemes is INSANE! With the Chitchatuk we have another Simmons/Zindell parallell (is Father Gaucus the Shanidar comparision? )!!! On chapter 56 almost done and searching frantically for a used copy of "Rise"! *****

It grabbed me with the rescue at the Time Tombs...and then the various adventures as they journey...

In Rise you will start getting it all explained...from the Shrike to what the Teacher of Man teaches. ******************************************************

Some of the Pax members become some of my favorite characters of all four Hyperion books.

But Nemes will always make my skin crawl. ******************************************************
