For some reason I've been scared to death to ever email David Zindell and tell him this board exists, but the more I read Endymion the more I want to contact Dan Simmons. What the connection? Well they both wrote their Sci-Fi opuses at roughly the same time and the last time I checked they both live in or around Boulder, Colorado.

Even though these guys have completely different writing styles alot of their "ingenuity" seems similar-like ARNists and shel-neckers, manifold and farcasters, seedships and the concept of long forgotten populations evolving outside of the general view like-The Ousters and the "manswarm". Godlike intelligences, etc..you see where I'm going with this. Yes even with the similarities they are completely different. Simmons kept weapons in, Zindell didn't, Simmon's struck it rich with Bantam/Spectra, Zindell got totally shafted by Bantam/Spectra....

I'm, really, of a mind to email Dan and ask him if he knows Zindell---if so, I'd give my eye teeth to have heard them talk together while Neverness and Hyperion were in the processes of creation. *****

My post on Dan's forum at dansimmons.com:

Quote:Ahira's Hangar is my Sci-Fi Fantasy board-you can search it if you like. It's themed on David Zindell's Neverness/Requiem for Homo Sapiens novels. Although we center on New Mexico based authors such as Stephen R. Donaldson, Roger Zelazny, George R. R. Martin, Walter Jon Williams and Jack Williamson we have found ourselves with forums devoted to two guys from Colorado: David Zindell and Dan Simmons.

Sorry if it seems like I'm advertising, I'm not-just trying to make Dan aware that's there's another forum out there. My real question is this: Hyperion and Neverness were intitially writen around the same time-both are mindblowing, incredibly detailed, stories set in a far-flung future, and both, eventually ended up published in paperback by Bantam/Spectrum (although Dan got a much better deal out of that than David...) Zindell doesn't even know about my board. I wish there was a way to email Dan to find out if he's ever met Zindell and exchanged ideas. I'd be extremely fascinated to hear what the conversation was like, if so....thanks! *****

No response yet--I prob shoudn't have titled my post "A Big Fan from Ahira's Hangar" in General Disc.--should have put "Dan do you know Zindell?" in his Writing Well Forum--Dan has been ther twice since then... *****
