I didn't realize until I got further into Ilium this weekend, that there is a prequel novella in Simmons's short story collection called Worlds Enough and Time. The story is called The Ninth of Av, and is very chilling... Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

I am nearly done with Ilium now, and absolutely love it! It mixes the Iliad (Trojan War), with some Shakespeare, has some bits that remind me of Zelazny's Lord of Light, and one of the plot lines follows these sentient robots from the moon of Jupiter, and they are very very very cool! (As you can tell, I like the Moravecs).
Very enjoyable read!
I don't know which will be harder waiting for -- Olympos or A Feast For Crows. Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

Welcome to the Hangar, Pilot! I have not yet heard of a release date for the paperback of Ilium, but have noticed that with many major publications, about a year will often go by between hardcover and mass market paperback releases...

In the meantime, perhaps your local library could borrow a copy for you through interlibrary loan of they do not have one themselves? It's a wonderful read! Don't wait if you don't have to! Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

Perhaps in a month or so, after the book has been out for awhile, you might stumble into a used copy, too, either in a bookstore or online. You can sometimes save a lot of money that way. I buy quite a lot of stuff used online from Amazon... Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

Cinescape's Coming Attractions site has some info on the possibility of an Ilium movie.

Quote:January 9, 2004... Science fiction writer Dan Simmons has sold the movie option to his latest book, ILIUM, and its forthcoming sequel OLYMPOS to Digital Domain and Barnet Bain Films. The two firms will package a "visual representation" pitch of the proposed movie franchise and begin shopping it around to prospective directors, stars and studios hoping to attract collaborators.

I just wanted to say that the excellent Illium in now available in mass market paperback.

If you haven't had a chance to read this yet -- run don't walk -- and do your self a huge favor by picking up a copy.

The second half of the duology, Olympos, has been released this month in hardcover, so you don;t even have to wait for the second half of the story. ******************************************************
