This trivia question deals with a more popular subject--that steel bladed, ruby red eyed enigma of entropy, the Shrike!

In what short-story from Dan's collection PRAYERS TO BROKEN STONES, does the Shrike make an appearance? And for extra credit explain how this same story also relates to the ENDYMION books?

You couldn't have made it easy and asked about the story from Worlds Enough and Time that I've read recently, could you?? (joke, joke )

I will have to poke around and get back with you soon. Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

Thank you for your patience!

The Shrike, well, shrikes, are mentioned in Remembering Siri, the short story which inspired the Hyperion books.

But I believe that the answer you might be looking for is the story called The Death of the Centaur wherein the centaur-hero named Raul does battle against the Shrike.
In Endymion I believe that it is said that the hero, Raul Endymion had been named after a centaur-hero from an old legend who was named Raul... Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

Yes, you are correct on both counts!

Did you have to read the story to get the answer or just do some skimming?

Off to think of another question to post...

That is one of the books I've never been able to find at any of my local bookstores, so I had to order a used copy from the internet and skim through the stories until I found the Shrike references!
I am glad to have the book, though -- I've been looking for it for over a year.
I've heard very good things baout some of the stories. Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell
