OK, a few weeks ago I was having a discussion with some local folks and when I said LotR was a fundametally Christian story, their reply was an wide-eyed "How could I think that Tolkien's epic was Christian?" They basically thought I was insane for even thinking this way. In their opinion there are no elements of Christianity in LotR. OK, I've always presumed that there was a Christian tone or milieu to Tolkien's triology. Furthermore, I had presumed that this opinion was supported by scholars who had thought more about it than I had.

Among this group I do not think most of them knew that Tolkien was a devout and practicing Roman Catholic. taraswizard
