I agree with a lot said here. The Hobbit is most definitely not in the same literary league as LoTR, and that could have been a problem if someone expects episodes 4 and 5 of the movie adaptations. I think the bare bones of the story have enough action/narrative drive (even though they'll probably need to be changed quite a lot!) on their own, and then the second movie...that could be the best of them all! There is tons and tons of material in the timeline for such visual masters as Jackson and Del Toro to just get out there and blow everyone's minds! Roll on 2010!!!

The second movie isn't actually The Hobbit, from what I understand. It will introduce material from other sources of Tolkien's regarding the time between when Bilbo returns to Hobbitton and Gandalf talks him into giving the ring to Frodo...
