*shrug* No idea. They make me use it. Doesn't seem much different, in terms of the text, but some people there use it for phone calls. It was odd at first, skyping people sitting at the next desk over, but it's convenient if you don't want your conversation heard.

heh
Hyperception and I use Facebook chat to communicate between bedroom and living room, if it is something we don't wish Beorn to overhear.

My parents used to use Yiddish for the same purpose.
A shame, as neither my sister nor I now know more than a few words here and there...

Yeah...when my parents spoke (argued) with each other in Chinese, it was alien gibberish to me. But it always involved a certain word uttered often and emphatically.
Didn't take much to deduce it was a swear word.

Yep. Wiped out is a good way to describe how I am physically feeling right now. :td:

I have my second sleep lab study tonight, though, so if all goes well in a couple of weeks I will have my Darth Vader breathing mask (I will not be bale to have it immediately - it has to be ordered) and will be able to start having decent sleep. :cloud:

Here's hoping all goes well for you tonight, Duchess! :)

Still packing. And the Internet connection is back. It seemed to have disappeared on Sunday, to the point where I thought maybe Verizon had jumped the gun and switched my service to the new apartment too soon. But this morning I was back in bidness. 8) Possible that the problem is in the modem -- I've occasionally been having to restart it over the past few months. If it happens again, especially after I get to the new place, I guess I'll just buy a new modem.

Hello, ali? Can you hear me now? :P

Good luck at the sleep lab, Duchess! If you're getting a Vader mask, might as well get the helmet and cape, too. Freak out your family!

MW -- Yup, so far, so good. No idea what happened on Sunday.

I'd given myself today to pack the kitchen. Instead, I found myself editing the first draft of the 2009 NaNo novel all day. I had this task on my to-do list at the start of my sabbatical and just never got around to it. So it's not like I was supposed to pack the kitchen but instead I went deep-sea diving or something. Still, the kitchen was supposed to be done today, and instead I'll be working on it tonight and tomorrow morning because I have errands to run tomorrow afternoon (little things like signing the new lease ;) ). And the 2nd draft of the novel is done. I had just about given up hope of getting it done before going back to work.

As for this whole packing thing, the cat is becoming seriously alarmed. She keeps meowing at me, as if to say, "I like being able to climb all over the boxes and stuff, but really, when are you going to unpack them and put everything away again?" Boy, is she in for a surprise on Thursday, when she gets locked in the bathroom while the movers are here...

Maybe give your cat a sedative, too?

(Kidding!)

You know, I joke about the NaNo thing, but I recognize that it helps hone writing skills.
Good luck with your kitchen packing, anyway! I'm trying to keep my place (and my life) uncluttered, purging myself of things that aren't really essential to me, so that if and when I do move, it won't be a complete nightmare. Easier said than done, of course.

Meanwhile, right now my typing skills are out of whack. I banged up my little finger putting up $#%! metal shelves at work today, and it hurts too much to type with it. You don't realize how much you depend on your pinkie at the keyboard, until you try typing without it. I mean, it's responsible for "A" and the Shift key...yeah, two of the most often hit keys. Aaargh. <--- See?

Our organization's Mother of All Moves is finally done, btw. However, in the past few weeks, it was Warehouse II: The Furniture Strikes Back. Cages were built for the sport associations - which meant we had to move any furniture out of the way so the cage guys could line up their posts. If inanimate objects could laugh, then all that evil office furniture would be mocking me.

In typing this post, I slipped up numerous times while cursing a lot, all because my little finger is out of action. Hey, I could pretend I'm Thomas Covenant, stubbornly typing away with numb, leprous hands...

Last time we moved we hired removalists who packed our stuff, moved it and placed the boxes in the nominated rooms - ie. anything packed from the kitchen was placed in the kitchen at the new place. Prior to this move, we moved ourselves.

All I can say is, I'd pay (almost) anything to move house using the first method - it just isn't worth DYI moving (IMO).

Agreed. I want to do it that way next time too, but the GF says she'd rather pack the boxes at least. *shrug* Long as she doesn't expect me to... ;)

I don't mind packing boxes for a move - it's my stuff, so I know I'd be careful. It's big and/or fragile items that would worry me, like my TV or computer desk. No matter how careful movers may claim they are, at the end of the day, they just want to get your stuff to where it's going, whether it's in one piece or several. I don't say this to denigrate movers - if anything, they have my sympathy, after seeing for myself the trouble they went through to haul our organization's stuff around, multiple times in some cases because my bosses couldn't decide whether to keep it or dump it.

If there's one thing I've learned from my company's move, it's that everything needs to be labelled and correctly so. It saves you and the movers a whole lotta grief. Mind you, I'm talking about a scenario involving thousands of items going to different offices on different floors. I'll toot my horn here and say that I did carefully pack and label my stuff for the move...the problem was that either some of the movers couldn't read labels, or some opportunists (not necessarily the movers) during the chaos decided to help themselves, because some of my things have gone AWOL - including a very nice wrench set worth a hundred dollars.

Regarding hoarding: I witnessed it first-hand in my mom. That may be why I'm so averse to having a lot of possessions - I don't want to end up weighed down by stuff like she was - although in her defense, she wasn't nearly as bad as some hopeless cases you see on TV. I think because she was poor in China and didn't have a lot, when she came here, she instinctively hung onto things. But that may be an overly simplistic explanation.

The only "large" collection I have going is my CD/DVD "library." Haven't counted up my movies, but my CD collection is the bigger one - I figure I've got around 300. A fair number, but not stupendously large - thank goodness. It's still manageable. Indeed, I'm sure it's a paltry number compared to many music collections out there.

Haha, my grandmother hoarded a lot of stuff too, and when she died, and my mother cleaned out her house, she swore I'd never have to go through that, and started to get all minimalist. :D

I inherited my grandmothers book collection. :D Which was my grandfathers as well before that, and they were both erudite and academic types. It's in storage, 'cause I don't have the room for it. Hell, I don't have the room for all mine, some of which are in storage too, including my childrens books, like my complete Hardy Boys series, and stuff like that. (I like books. Everything else, I could survive losing if I absolutely had to.)

(Oh, I only inherited her English books. The French, German, Greek and miscellaneous other languge books went to friends who could read them. )
