Happy Birthday! Nobody should be wished a hb on Facebook-it's their fault for using it! (Don't remember is it was MySpace or Facebook, but this guy just got 7 years in prison after he said "Hey, I might not be around for a while-just robbed a bank and am on the run, I love you guys!" they tracked him right down after that )

Now that's funny! It's great that they could track down a criminal via Facebook or Myspace. But that's a double-edged sword, isn't it? That means law-abiding citizens could also be followed without their knowledge (and obviously without their explicit consent).

I remain ambivalent about Facebook. I'm just not at a point where I can trust my privacy in its hands. I'm not alone in this: Canada's privacy commissioner had concerns, too. Supposedly, Facebook and the commissioner have shook hands now and the company is working to address her concerns. But I'm naturally skeptical.

Yeah, let's just say I'm pretty careful about posting certain things on Facebook. Like, for instance, comments about my job and my feelings toward it. And any plans I may have to be out of town for a weekend or so. Y'know, just in case.

I don't do Facebook at all...(although the GF does). Hard enough keeping up here and at the Watch.

Yeah, it would become a chore, instead of being fun. I realize that's also due to my personality: I'm not a social butterfly and will likely never be (whether in "real life" or online). But I'm cool with people who enjoy Facebook and its variants. I guess Facebook is like a glorified message board, with all sorts of whiz-bang features to woo users.

Plus the commercialism factor at Facebook, etc., which makes it more annoying than a message board. Being a "fan" of Store X essentially just gives them another avenue for marketing to you.

Haha, yeah, social media marketing is the new big thing, although opinions are divided as to its worth.

All of the ads are annoying as heck - but I love the updates on my Red Wings, and enjoy the little games I play (Farmville, growing the forest, Farkle (a dice game), word scramble (which is a cross between word search and scrabble), etc. They are really relaxing and do not take much time or effort.

Remind me to start kicking more baby tress your way.

I do not play Mafia Wars (I play these games to relax, and Mafia Wars does not sounds relaxing to me ), but do play Farmville from the same gaming company. Farmville also has a lot of posts that non-players are probably absolutely not interested in, but players really need to see (such as sharing money and farm animals). I think this company (and others) do this on purpose in trying to recruit new players, and in trying to increase social interaction between players.

That said, I think that sometime today I am going to start a thread about Facebook games down in the tech forum, so we can talk about them someplace other than the birthday thread.

Every time I'm here I click on this thread because I know we were talking about something else, but can never remember what.
