I'm surprised we don't already have a thread on this--I've seen the book around but I didn't know it was related to the "Hainish" world.

I saw this at the store yesterday and picked it up. It is a very short little book - probably closer to novella than novel length. And the plot sounded interesting from the blurb on the back cover.

Will be back with more in a few days after I have had time to read it.

Great little book.
minor spoilers:
Sutty is from Inida, but grows up in Canada. The Earth of her time is in tumult and uproar and violence from religious fanatics, so she decides to go to other worlds as a researcher - a historian, linguist, etc.

Her first posting after school is to a world that has systematically destroyed its past history, literature, etc. - everything that she is qualified to study - after one ethnic group comes to power following that world's first contact with great galactic civilisation.

Sutty finds traces of an old oral tradition in some people living in the back hills. This leads to a great journey of discovery - of both the great treaures of a world and of herself. [/spoilers]
