Ahira's Hangar

Saw this was out in mass market paperback the last time I went to a bookstore.

I thought it was a good book with deeply and well drawn characters (as you would expect from both Martin and Abraham) but it could have been a lot better book if the motivation behind the aliens had been explained.

Like Stephen R. Donaldson's "Man Who" detective novels where Puerto del Sol is modeled after Albuquerque, you can already feel the same thing with Diegotown. Like the Hegria in those books mirroring the real life dive bar the El Madrid, there really is an El Rey in downtown Albuquerque...Initially it's really funny seeing a couple of white guys try to create a bastard 'vato' character, but Espejo's dillema is so compelling that you can give them a break.

I really enjoyed the book--it had a number of great twists and turns. I wanted to know that too but . Maybe we should beg them for a sequel to find out why especially before .

In a way it reminded me of Startide Rising--felt very Brin-ish, espescially with the detailed desciptions of the Species and flora description had a dash of Simmions too...
