[spoilers]
Linden wakes up in a bed, naked other than having sheets on top of her. For a wild moment she believes that the had not been killed in the real world - that paramedics had taken her to the hospital. But deep inside she knows the truth, that she died from thsoe bullets.
Then she realizes that her health sense and the augmented senses of the Land are gone. She knows that the Mahdoubt must have brought her back to the time of Kevin's Dirt. She remembers the calls of her friends, so knows that it must not be too long after she was taken away by RC and the croyel. She can feel spring in the air.
She feels deep shame that she had been tricked by Roger, who had tarnished her memories of his father.
This, folks, is how a survivor of severe emotional abuse as a child reacts to bad things. Donaldson must have researched the heck out of abuse survivors, because this is so true that it hurts. In anyone's eyes, it would be obvious that any and all shame should lie with Roger, who deliberately misled Linden, rather than in Linden, who eventually discovered the deception. But - Linden's parents have twisted a part of her with their emotional abuse. So she instinctively blames herself when other people treat her like crap.
Ridiculous and unfair? Most certainly. But this is what childhood emotional abuse does to the innermost being of its victims. And that is why it is so evil.
Linden burns for vengeance. But she knows that she must take it one step at a time. Her first step will be finding her Staff, so she can wash gerself free from the taint of Kevin's Dirt. In order to find the Staff, she finally opens her eyes and looks about - and finds herself in her old room at Revelstone - in the company of the Mahdoubt.
The Mahdoubt immediately gives her water from Glimmermere to drink, which immediately helps her feel physically better.
The Mahdoubt tells her that she herslf and Pahni has undressed and bathed Linden. Her friends are very concerned over her.
Linden thanks the Mahdoubt for all of her help and hopes she will someday be worth the trouble. And you can see how all of her insecurities have overrun her. Be worth the trouble? How is the woman who formed the Staff of Law and who ended the Sunbane not already be worth the trouble? But this, too, shows the long term damage of childhood emotional abuse. It shows how the legacy of Linden's parents can still erupt in times of immense stress, and how - at the bottom of her soul - there is a feeling of essential worthlessness eating away at her - even after all of these years and after all of her great accomplishments.
The Mahdoubt tells Linden that her friends are on their way, and that Linden should ask her questions now, before they arrive. For when they arrive, the Mahdoubt will leave.
The Mahdoubt tells Linden that she does not know how Linden can save Jeremiah. She tells her that she did not tell Linden about Roger and the croyel because Linden had need of the suffering in order to grow stronger. She tells Linden to give herself a break in not immediately discovering the trick. She tells Linden that the Theomach protected tiem by telling Berek and Damelon that Linden had been an Unfettered.
The Insequent and the Elohim share only this, my lady, that we do not desire the destruction of the Earth.
The Mahdoubt tells Linden that Jeremiah has great and valuable power. The "box' he made at Skyweir was not only transport, but also a way to blind the Elohim as to what was going on.
So the weird building power is Jeremaih's then, and not the croyel's???
And the Insequent are not the shadows in the heart of the Elohim.
And the Mahdoubt gives Linden a priceless gift - her true name and the power to compel her. (Shades of Earthsea! ).
The Mahdoubt tells Linden to get dressed and eat, as her friends are nearly here. then the Insequent departs, leaving Linden alone to greet her friends.
Lots of info here about the Insequent....
