What sort of read do you like? Werewolves? Vampires? Ghosts?
For witches, weres, vamps, and demons, Kim Harrison is pretty good, her series starts with Dead Witch Walking.
For weres I recently read Bitten by Kelley Armstrong, and thought it was pretty good.
It is first in a series, and I do not know how the rest of the series goes yet.
I keep hearing great things about Jim Butcher, though as of yet I have only read a short story by him. Everyone says the first couple of books are a bit weak, but that he gets better as he goes.
For dark and weird, there is a new series out by Charlaine Harris where a girl can find dead bodies...the books all have the word "Grave" in the titles. She also has a decent vampire series out featuring a mind reading bar maid named Sookie Stackhouse.
For vamps, there is a great stand alone novel by Robin McKinley called Sunshine ~ it is a bit hard to get into initially, but well worth the effort.
For vampires in an historical setting there is George R. R. Martin's Fevre Dream or the series by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro which starts with the excellent Hotel Transylvania.
For vamps in a more scientific setting, there is Dan Simmons and Children of the Night.
For the ultimate "thing in the dark" thrill, there is Dan Simmon's The Terror, which is a great adventure story and historical novel as well.
For a fun read and a sort of updating of the Frankenstein story, I love Dean Koontz's The Watchers.
For romantic comedy, you could try Mary Janice Davidson - she has a series about vampires and one about werewolves, and she has brought them together in the later Queen Betsy (vampire) books.
