Shelby Foote, novelist, historian, man of American letters, died in his Memphis home on Thursday. He was 88 yrs. old. His relative anonymity was broken in the early 90s through Ken Burn's PBS Civil War documentary, which was based on Mr. Foote's three volume history of 19th century conflict. FWIW, he was a lifelong friend of the author Walker Percy.

BookTV, BookTV is the weekend programming segment as shown on CSPANII cable network, over July 4th weekend, rebroadcast a three hour interview and tour the network had done with Mr. Foote in 2001. Discussed his friendship with Walker Piercy, growing up in NW Mississippi, experience in WWII (he served in the US Army and Marines), literary influences and opinions. All very good and interesting. taraswizard

I've always heard great things about his Civil War, but have never found time to read it. One of these days... ******************************************************
