Words can't express anything-the magnitude is overwhelming. My god, thousands dead, thousands more dead to be found. Armed assualts on hospitals, rapes, shootings, etc...Count your blessings people. *****

I grew up near there. My brother used to live in New Orleans--he played music in an Irish pub on Bourbon Street. I know this sounds silly, but I cried when the news came in that Cafe Du Monde is still standing.

At the same time I am enraged. FEMA knew this was a likely disaster. They had papers and studies predicting it. Yet for decades the budgets to repair and upgrade New Orleans' levies were raided for other projects. Getting authorization to use the National Guard wasn't difficult--it only took some backbone and foresight from any number of public officials, including the head of FEMA, the governors of Louisiana and Mississipi, the Secretary of Homeland Security or of course the President himself. That Bush didn't see fit to even end his vacation for two days, and his administration spend so much of the first few critical days wearing blinders and saying everything was going well...! :">

Of course I also think there's a seriously wrong perception that I've come across for years that a hurricane is just a big thunderstorm. No. It is more like a slow motion atomic explosion. An engineer I knew once tried to tell me a tornado was worse than a hurricane. That's like saying a sniper is more dangerous than an invading army!

The images on the news have been horrifying beyond belief. If I knew anyone who lives down there, I'm sure it would be even worse!

Yes, Danlo -- I am counting my blessings. Indeed, I am counting them.

I have turned in the paperwork as a disaster volunteer for my employer. I should know something next week about whether or not I will be deployed. ******************************************************
