I remember from Ken Burns' recent documentary The War one of the featured veterans saying that the fellow soldiers he admired the most were the quiet ones who were terrified of the hell they found themselves in, yet who still fought as hard as anyone.
Another said that he thought the bravest men on the field were the Medics, because they went about their business of trying to save lives even as their red cross insignias made them easy targets for enemy fire.
