I have been reading the new book, and though I have only read a few chapters, I am loving it.

I think Wolfe is trying to deconstruct sailing ships and pirates the same way he did the ancient world in the Latro books. The main character (male) has already been gang raped twice by other men in the crew. And though Chris describes himself as a murderer and pirate, there is still something very likable about him. As always, there are strange and unexplained things going on, but I expect that with Wolfe.

I have been having sinus problems, so am still not very far into the book (Gene Wolfe is not a writer you want to read when you are not able to think clearly - there is too much to miss). But what I have read so far is very enjoyable. I am looking forward to feeling a bit better and reading the rest of the book.

I think he may have been inspired by the Pirates of the Carribean movies, in a "Let me show people what pirates were ACTUALLY like" sort of way.

Ah well. Time to gp back upstairs, wrap myself in a bunch of blankets, make some hot tea, and midlessly spend the day watching old Doris Day movies on the classic movie channels again...

Feeling a bit better today, so finished the book. Really enjoyed it, really liked Chris.

Syl, when you read it, I would like to talk about Wolfe's view on child molesting priests with you! (We do not see any firsthand in the book - it comes up as a side topic in discussions among the characters, none of whom do that).

Sure. I'll have to make a trip by the library and see if they can order it for me.
