I've heard many people talk of the book called Legends, with its short stories from many of today's most popular fantasy writers such as George R.R. Martin. But did you know that there is a companion volume of short stories from science fiction writers called Far Horizons? Like in Legends, these writers have contributed short stories from their most popular venues, such as an Orson Scott Card story about Ender Wiggin and an Uplift story from David Brin. Included is a Hyperion story from Dan Simmons! It begins with a forward from Simmons where he sums up the action in the four books which make up the Hyperion Cantos, and then comes the story, which is called Orphans of the Helix. I do not want to make any spoilers for those of you who haven't read the story, but here is one of my favorite quotes:

"This may be the cause of their distress signal," the other green, Res Sandre, said dryly.
"If it were coming at me or my world, I'd scream so loudly that you'd hear me two hundred and twenty-eight light-years away without a radio," said the young white-band, Den Soa.

my sister, o my sister! There's the cause on 't. Whether we fall by ambition, blood, or lust, Like diamonds we are cut with our own dust -- John Webster's "The Duchess of Malfi", first performed in England in 1614

This story also appears in Dan Simmons's short story collection Worlds Enough and Time with a very interesting introduction. Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

I thought this story was great. I must say I wasn't as impressed with the novels it led into. Illium and Olympos had a lot of good, but didn't equal my expectations set by this story.
