This, I believe, is the short story in A Prayer for the Broken Stones that got Harlan Ellison's attention...it's also Simmon's 1st published work:

"The River Styx Runs Upstream," won the Rod Serling Memorial Award in 1982.

B right back w/more on "Stones"...

Not only did this collection contain the story that got Dan published for the first time, "The River Styx Runs Upstream", it also included 3 stories ("Carrion Comfort", "Remembering Siri" and "Eyes I Dare Not Meet in Dreams") which grew into the novels CARRION COMFORT, HYPERION and THE HOLLOW MAN respectively. It also included two stories ("Shave and a Haircut, Two Bites" and "Metastasis") that were produced as episodes of the television series MONSTERS. And finally, another of the stories ("The Death of the Centaur"), is connected to the ENDYMION books in an interesting way that I want spoil.

Is movie The Hollow Man, with Kevin Bacon, based on Dan's book? *****

While I have read the book, I have not seen (or even heard of) the film...so I honestly do not know. I will go to Netflix and see if I can find a description of the movie and get back with you. ******************************************************

Here is the Netflix description:

Quote:
Cocky researcher Sebastian Caine (Kevin Bacon) is a working on a project to make living creatures invisible. He's so confident he's found the right formula that he tests it on himself and begins to vanish. Problem is, no one can figure out how to make him visible again. Soon his invisibility drives Caine mad -- with terrifying results. The special effects are a knockout as Caine fades away organ by organ in director Paul Verhoeven's thriller.

It certainly does not sound like the plot of the Simmons novel. While in Hollywood, anything is possible, but in this case, it is probably pretty safe to say that this is not inspired by the book. And if it was, they went even further from the plot than normal. ******************************************************
