When I read the first two Hyperion books I thought I'd almost figured out what the Shrike was-and then bamm: it's jumping off world, mangling ships and following Aenea down the Tethys

I'm trying to think of a more powerful and mysterious invention in all of literature. Now Sandworms are very cool, for instance, but the Shrike Is something else, entirely. *****
