Weird weather weekend around North America. Huge snowstorm in the Dakotas, giving the Black Hills more than two feet of snow - all the while poor Cuba braces for yet another category two hurricane in Paloma.

We might get our first snow dump of the year from the Dakotas storm - today we are getting rain from the front edge of the storm - the backside is what dumped on the plains.

Yes, today the white stuff hit us. Well, overnight, anyway. Grabbed a shot while going to work:

We have our first snow of the year today in the form of a gentle winter mix...

Rain rain and more rain here. Still, it's the rainy season where I am...should be happening (although it started early this year). I quite like it, except for the going out in it. The GF would rather there was sun though.

Actually, I think she's probably glad right now...couple of days back when we had a rare sunny day, she gave herself a nasty sunburn.

Last night I got my first drive home in the snow in the middle of the night for this winter. It was just enough to cover the road enough to make a two track, and turn into ice at intersections.

Today the sun is out and everything is bright - but the high temperature will be right around freezing, and the wind chill is well below freezing.

Time to dig out my boots!

This weekend the area ski slopes will be opening, the Christmas tree at Campus Martius in downtown Detroit will be lit up on Friday, and the outdoor ice rink at Campus Martius will open for the winter.

Speaking of winter...

Any suggestions of what this Floridian should pack for her trip to Manhattan this weekend? I have t-shirts and jeans, the occasional sweatshirt somewhere...and that's about it.

No cash to go out and buy anything new.
So, what's my best strategy? Layers?

Don't know Manhattan, but I know wind. If you don't have gloves, you can always shove your hands in your pockets. But your ears will be entirely defenseless. I'd say earmuffs are a necessity when it's windy. Cold ears will make your life miserable outdoors.

That's a bit colder than I've experienced in a long time...

Is one of your sweatshirts a hoodie? If so, pack that one, as at least you could use the hood to protect your head and ears.

I know how warm (or cold) I feel is all about my head, hands, and feet, and not so much my torso or arms or legs.

In fact, in the winter I sometimes carry around an extra pair of socks in my purse. That way if it is really cold, or my feet get wet, I can either put them on as an extra pair for warmth, or put them on as a dry pair.

No hoodies...
Hyperception is making me try on some of his packed away old winter jackets and coats from when he lived in The Bronx. So far, his full length down coat fits, but that feels like overkill.
He says he would rather I have something heavy, than come home sick...
